1 AXIOM Stereo
(working title)
"Ein Spinngewebe mit einer gigantischen Spinne hängt irgendwo zwischen Leinwand und Zuschauer … " Sergej Eisenstein, Über den Raumfilm (1947)
Axiom Stereo is an Open Hardware Project that aims to develop a Stereoscopic beamsplitter Rig specifically for the AXIOM Beta, potentially for other Compact Digital Cinema Cameras as well.
Based on a first prototype ([1]), this will be a second generation prototype. The development should proceed by including the expertise of experienced stereographers and artists. As mentioned by Sebastian, the so-called ‚Ergonomietreffen‘ launched by the AXIOM team could be reinstalled for this project.
2 Features
• high quality 50/50 mirror in mirrorbox
• mechanically adjustable axes ----- IA (transl. X) / Conv. (rot. Y) / Roll (rot. Z) / Tilt (rot. X) / Height (transl. Y)
• Inter Axial Travel max. 60-70 mm
• Convergence max. 5°
• Motorizable axes IA and Conv.
• IA Counter .1 mm stepsize
3 Technical Specifications
4 Structure
The heart of the AXIOM Stereo is the mirror, a specially coated 50/50 unilateral reflective mirror positioned in a 45° angle to each camera. One of the cameras is reflected (top/bottom camera), the second camera is filming through the mirror (back camera), housed by a mirrorbox to reduce reflection and ghosting from the back. An aluminium skeleton serves as basic structure to ensure the relative position of the cameras and to minimize movement and shaking. For each camera, a positioning stage enables position calibration in multiple directions (Inter Axial, Convergence, Roll, Tilt, Height) in order to provide synchronized images. The motorization of IA and Convergence should be enough for an effective use.
5 Development
• Benchmark research - Ergonomietreffen?
• MVP (minimum viable product) development
• Software development (Interface, Timelock, Calibration modes etc.)
